William Earl Johnson was born in Marion, South Carolina on April 22, 1956, to the late Alvina Gilliam.
He attended Elizabeth Public School System and graduated from Edison Vo-tech in 1975.
William was employed by the City of Elizabeth for over 25 years as a Director of Recreation. This career opened a great opportunity to connect with city residents, and to give back to the community in which he grew up in.
He was a devoted father and always put his children first, encouraging them to always do their best.
He was an excellent protector and provider. William had great love for his family and friends. Whenever anyone needed anything he was always there to help and encourage.
William enjoyed family gatherings and cooking on the grill, shopping at Home Depot, doing home repairs, and helping his son fix his car. He was an avid Black Friday shopper and a pick-it player.. Watching sports was a favorite pastime for William. Lose or win he was a die hard New York Giants and New York Knicks fan always coaching and cheering from his favorite chair.
He departed this earth with his brother Randolph Gilliam on October 16, 2020.
William was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Alvina and Wirt Gilliam. His sisters Diane, Gloria, and Wanda Gilliam.
He leaves to cherish his special memories his loving children, William Jr. and Camille Johnson. Two stepdaughters Takia Thomas and Alicia Mathews. His sisters Gomeria Johnson, Daisy Gilliam and Sherly Ann Skinner. His brothers Allen Hayes, Wirt Gilliam Jr., and Tyrone and Jerome Johnson. His dearest friend Curtis Myers and Claude Rawlings, and cousin Tracy Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
